Vlogging Vs Blogging, Which Is Better For You?
Blogging and Vlogging are both very effective strategies for Companies and Public Figures whom want to generate as much traffic as possible to their website. As I dive deeper into understanding the online world, I see there are huge advantages for both blogging and vlogging. It is not mandatory to do both, however it also depends on what you want the outcome to be. More traffic, create a passive income from ads, gain awareness and a following, or just get your message out there on that big World Wide Web!
Vlogging (Short for Video Blogging) –is a form of blog for which the medium is video
Blogging –is a discussion or informational website published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries (“posts”)
Blogging
Generating Traffic – Blogging is an great and somewhat easy way to generate traffic, but it is so much more than just typing some thoughts onto your computer. You have to have a big understanding of SEO, Meta-descriptions, keyword research and so on. When you search for information on google, it will display the most popular pages that contain the keywords that you searched for. Bottom line – Learn SEO! I learned the latest SEO strategies from the SEO wizard himself, Gordon Paterson with Cadence Creative Studios. This guy knows SEO like the back of his hand and made it SO easy to understand. I highly recommend learning how to optimize your blog with him!
Skillset – For Blogging, you need to be a decent writer, being able to convey your message through typing words on a computer can be a challenging task for some. Blogs appeal more to people who want very detailed information that they can read at their own pace. Usually straight to the point, with no distractions. You also do not need a ton of “technical” skills, if you are a naturally inclined writer, then you are good to go!
Personality – If you are more of an introverted person, and want to keep it that way, then blogging may be the best fit for you. Blogging can be like your thoughts log, or diary. If you love getting the facts out, sharing recipes but not showing how you cooked them, and simply just want to get your thoughts out there by typing them out, optimizing them, and not caring too much about sharing your character/personality… then blogging may be the best method of communication for you.
Equipment/Costs – Blogging is super simple and affordable in means of equipment. Wifi, and a laptop, and maybe a journal.
How to Share it – There are many websites that help you get your blogs out there. I found an epic rundown on all the Blogging Platforms you can utilize to start your blog through the website Start Blogging Online, check it out!
Income – The top blogs out there make a very good income, they use tactics like Affiliate marketing and great SEO strategies. They also have been writing consistent, relative, fresh blogs for quite awhile! We all start somewhere, right?
Vlogging
Generating Traffic – Vlogs are a real fun and easy way to generate traffic. Most Video Platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo rank the videos according to the amount of likes and shares that they get. Therefore, you do not need to have as much of a knowledge of SEO. I still HIGHLY highly suggest learning good SEO strategies though, as it is absolutely essential in the online world.
Skillset – Vlogging is great for those whom do not feel very skilled at writing and conveying their messages through typed words in structured sentences. However, depending on what your topics are about, you may need to be somewhat articulate verbally. If you are a makeup artist demonstrating how to do a smokey eye, or a cook wanting to show how you bake a delicious meatloaf, then you do not need to be highly articulate for that. If you are speaking about current events, or sharing information, you need to make sure you are able to get your thoughts out in an easy to understand manor. This now brings me to another huge benefit of vlogging – Editing! Once you become skilled at Editing, you can really get creative and make your vlog fun, entertaining, and also shorten it to get your points across easier. Editing is a skill that can be learned, but there is a learning curve. I learned how to edit from a very gifted videographer Daniel Baker from Guided Films. He has an eye for editing and knows how to make a Vlog fun and entertaining as well, which is a HUGE bonus!
Personality – with Vlogging, whether you are introverted or extroverted, you can do really well and have fun making your vlog. If you are naturally a performer… then you are made for vlogging!! For those who know me, know that I am quite “quirky” and love to perform, so vlogging will be a way for me to get my personality out there as well as my message. Yes, it can be a bit nerve-wracking to get in front of a camera, even your camera on your phone, but TRUST me, it gets easier.
I always feel that if you have a message to share with the world, and you are NOT sharing it. Then you are doing the world a disservice by not sharing it! Get your voice out there. Do not worry about how you look or sound, that is what editing is for!
Equipment/Costs – This is where the big difference is between vlogging and blogging. It really depends on how deep into vlogging you want to get. If you are simply just wanting to speak to the camera, indoors, and not too much action… then just shoot videos with your smartphone! If you are going to be outside, then get a microphone for your smartphone, as people do not want to filter your words through all the background wind! If you are doing a travel vlog like I will be doing… then you may need to invest in some equipment. A decent camera, gimbal, tripod, assorted lenses, maybe a drone? Start small and work your way up, do not over do it!
The other costs that you will need to pay for is a good software for editing your videos. I LOVE Premiere Pro by Adobe Creative Cloud! There is so much you can do with that program.
How to Share it and Income – As I said above, the main Platforms are YouTube and Vimeo. Eventually you will start making profits off of ads if you agree to it when you sign up for an account. I found a list of the top youtube channels and the profits they make per click, check it out!
Here’s to your new adventure on your new Blog or Vlog… or BOTH!
With Love,
The Fit Gypsy.
