Top 8 Cybersecurity Skills Needed

Top 8 Cybersecurity skills

With businesses increasingly moving online and to cloud storage, the demand for cybersecurity is at an all-time high. With that achievement comes a high demand for cybersecurity experts capable of safeguarding digital data. A good cybersecurity professional must have a wide range of skills.

1. System Administration and Networking

To start a career in cybersecurity, you must first understand networking. Learning networking will help you understand the technical aspects of data transmission, which will help you secure your data. It is recommended to pursue networking certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and Cisco CCNA.

Mastering system administration is another skill that will come in handy. It all comes down to configuring and maintaining computers. You must be curious about your computer’s features and settings and willing to experiment a little.

2. Operating System and Virtual Machine Knowledge

A cybersecurity professional must be well-versed in operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OS and at ease working on any of these platforms. Virtual machines allow you to train and research in a controlled environment, allowing you to maximize your skills.

The next thing to remember is to be familiar with Kali Linux, the most popular Linux distribution for ethical hacking and penetration testing. It includes several hundred tools for Penetration Testing, Malware Analysis, Security Research, Computer Forensics, and other related tasks.

3. Network Security Control

The various measures used to improve network security are referred to as Network Security Control. You must understand how your network operates and how routers, firewalls, and other devices function. A firewall is a piece of hardware or software that blocks internet traffic from entering or exiting your computer. A cybersecurity expert must use a firewall to filter and prevent unauthorized network traffic.

You should also be familiar with intrusion detection, prevention, virtual private networks (VPNs), and remote access. For example, you should use the IDS to detect security policy violations and malicious network traffic.

4. Coding

Having no coding knowledge may limit your future cybersecurity opportunities. It would be best if you familiarize yourself with a few coding languages.

To have a successful career in cybersecurity, you should learn the following coding languages:

  • C and C++ are low-level programming languages that every cybersecurity professional should be familiar with.
  • Python is a well-known high-level programming language quickly gaining popularity among cyber experts. It will help you identify and repair vulnerabilities.
  • JavaScript: Knowing JavaScript gives you the ability to prevent cross-site scripting attacks.
  • PHP: Because most websites are built with PHP, learning it will help you defend against intruders.
  • HTML: Another language cybersecurity professionals should be familiar with is HTML, which is used by most websites and is one of the simplest to learn.
  • Go lang: It is excellent for cryptography and can be used to solve a variety of cybersecurity issues.
  • SQL: This language is used by attackers to damage stored data; one example is the SQL injection attack. As a result, understanding SQL (Structured Query Language) is advantageous.
  • Assembly Language: Assembly language will help you understand how malware functions and thus defend against it.

6. Blockchain Security

Blockchain is gaining popularity, thanks in part to the level of security it provides. As a result, cybersecurity professionals should become acquainted with blockchain and how it addresses security concerns. Consider it future preparation.

Blockchain will almost certainly make inroads into the Internet of Things (IoT), device security (more on later), network control, supply chain integration, identity control, and mobile computing.

The complexity of blockchain makes it difficult for intruders to compromise. To corrupt or destroy a blockchain, a cybercriminal would have to eliminate the data found on each user’s computer connected to the targeted global network.

7. The Internet of Things (IoT)

According to Statista, over 30 billion Internet of Things devices will be connected globally by 2025. With such a large number of devices comes an increase in security vulnerabilities. As a result, IoT security will become a higher priority shortly and an essential component of maintaining the integrity and security of the Internet system.

Because many IoT devices are sensors that collect personal data, the stakes for maintaining secure networks and consumer trust are higher.

IoT security focuses on protecting connected devices and networks over the Internet, which is especially important given that most of these devices access networks without human intervention or oversight. As a result, It is critical to implement adequate security measures so that IoT devices can be left alone to perform their functions without fear of unauthorized intruders.

8. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence, like blockchain, is a relative innovation that has seen widespread adoption. AI is ideal for the cybersecurity industry because it improves the reliability and consistency of cybersecurity measures by assisting security professionals in identifying suspicious activity and imparting a better understanding of the cyber environment.

AI provides automation and support that human capabilities cannot match, detecting threats that would otherwise go unnoticed and unaddressed.

Artificial intelligence can also be taught to learn and evolve, making it more capable of dealing with emerging threats and hacking techniques.
